Summer of Events

INSIDER ESPORTS -- Kai talks about the summer and what games and events to look forward to.

The super high temperatures followed by a couple days of showers. These are usually the signs that summer is upon us. Most college and U.S. students are out of school, while the Canadian students have a little less than a week before getting out of school.

Few weeks ago we saw new games being announced at E3 and in a little over a month, we’ll be seeing what Blizzard has to announce at Blizzcon. It’s a summer of games being released and even more games to come.

Personally, summer is one of those seasons that I like more than others. It’s one of those times, when you can play games for hours, going to sleep at 4 o’clock in the morning and waking up at 3 in the afternoon before playing again.

While some are fortunate enough to do this, others aren’t. The other players have to go out, find jobs and earn money. For those who graduated this year from college, it basically means 6 months of non-stop gaming before joining the work force again.

Summer isn’t just a time for games though. It’s also one of those times when those really good movies seem to be released week after week after week.

I’m sure that most of us are anticipating the return of Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The week after that, we see the third part of Ice Age along with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Public Enemies. Of course most of us remember Sacha Baron Cohen in the movie Borat. Well he returns with his other character Bruno.

Going into the sports scene, we have baseball coming into mid-season with the all-star game just around the corner. The NBA Draft is only a few days away and of course, if you’re from Canada, who can forget about the NHL Draft. Will the Islanders draft Tavares or Hedmen? Who’s going to get the Swedish goalie Gustavsson?

While those are what most people look forward to in the summer, there are more things on the down low, such as clubs, parties and of course LANs.

This last weekend we saw Devastation 2009, where players were socializing and showing off their gaming skills. In a few short weeks we will be seeing more events such as the ESEA LAN playoffs, Zero Ping Event’s LANapalooza 5, MLG Dallas and more.

There have been numerous announcements from companies as well. Valve is developing Left 4 Dead 2, which has a projected release date sometime in the fall. LucasArts and Bioware are teaming up again to bring Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Square Enix are currently developing an MMO for a popular game Final Fantasy.

The announcements of these new games haven’t stopped the companies from improving their older ones. Counter Strike have received updates, and so has Team Fortress 2.

The summer of 2009 is going to be an eventful one for both eSports and the regular everyday things.

Enjoy the summer, and a happy belated Father’s Day to all those dads out there.
