ESWC Masters of Cheonan - Day 1

CHEONAN, KOREA - Day 1 action concludes with one player being eliminated and several interesting results.

The first day of the ESWC Masters of Cheonan StarCraft competition is complete, with one player being eliminated, while the other three wait for day two to play out their matches. Day One pit the four players in the first round of a double elimination bracket and then began the losers bracket, eliminating the first player from the competition.

The first match was that of the two foreigners.  Greg "IdrA" Fields, the Terran player from the USA training with CJ Entus in Korea and representing the North and South American community, took on Oleksii "White-Ra" Krupnick, the Ukranian Protoss representing the European community.

Most of the active Brood War community was split on this match, as while PvT is White-Ra's strong point and he has beaten IdrA in the past, IdrA is still in Korea and has shown some promising TvP play lately. However, Krupnick stood victor at the end of the day, beating Fields 2-1 and advancing to the upper bracket finals.

Next up we had Seo "ToSsGirL" Ji-soo, the STX SouL Terran who is the lone female progamer in Korea, up against the Asian representative, Zhang "Super" Lu-ming, another Terran player from China.

The community once again found themselves at odds over this matchup. On one hand, Ji-soo is a progamer and is training with the best. On the other, Lu-ming is considered to be one of the strongest TvT players not in Korea and has excellent play in the game.

However, Ji-soo's progamer training paid off and she took the second upper bracket spot, with another 2-1 victory.

The final match of the day was Fields vs. Lu-ming in the lower bracket elimination game. Fields is not known for having strong TvT play and with Lu-ming's reputation in the matchup, most felt Fields was at a disadvantage.

However, he proved everyone, save a handful of supporters, wrong, winning the match 2-1, thus eliminating Lu-ming and securing himself a top 3 finish and a minimum of 1,000 USD. Lu-ming will walk away from the tournament with a congratulatory pat-on-the back and the pride of being the Asian representative.

The StarCraft tournament will conclude tonight, starting with the upper bracket final match between Krupnick and Ji-soo.

The winner of that match moves onto the Grand Final, with a guaranteed minimum 3,000 USD in prize money.

The loser plays Fields in the lower bracket finals, duping it out to see who gets to fight in the Grand Final, where the winner will walk away with 5,000 USD and the title of Champion of the ESWC Masters of Cheonan StarCraft tournament.
