WCG Fighter Club 2009

WCG USA expanded their competitions this year, endearing the fighting game scene with a massive 4 game tournament with prizes for all the top players. $500 would go to the winner of each game's tournament, while second place got a Samsung product and third walked away with shwag. The games of choice were Virtua Fighter 5, Dead or Alive 4, Soul Calibur 4, and arguably the main event, Street Fighter 4.

Today was Day 1, with the group stages taking place. The Samsung Experience was a mad house, with about 2 dozen XBOX 360s set up and Samsung LCD displays for each. Groups moved along quickly, with sWooZie shoutcasting matches that either held high importance or impromptu show matches arranged on a 55" Samsung LCD TV. .

Along with Swoozie, other faces from WCG: Ultimate Gamer made appearances. Prodigy and Zophar could be seen mingling with the crowd as well, with Zophar and Swoozie even taking part in several of the tournaments themselves.

The group stages ran fairly quickly, with the obvious favorites taking their places amongst the tops of their groups. The final 32 for SF4 along with the final 16 for the other 3 games were set by the end of the night, and the brackets were up for all to see on WCG USA's site, except for the Street Fighter 4 bracket for some reason.

Day 2's action will kick off tomorrow 1:30 PM at the same site, the Samsung Experience in the Time Warner Building in New York City. If you missed Day 1, I highly recommend checking out the action. Admission is free and there will definitely be some great games.

Didn't appear to be a good gamble, dude. :P

You gotta come out next year. It was a hell of a good time, I just couldn't afford to go back today.
