exaNs Art Class: Introduction
Have you ever found yourself not listening in class because you let go of your creative side in the margins of your notebook? Well, guess what; you’re not alone, and if you wish to sharpen your artistic abilities, you’re at the right place.
Before even pretending that I can teach you something about art, let me introduce myself. My name is Alexandre Misson, I’m 18 years old and I live in Quebec, Canada. I’ve been drawing all my life so I decided to actually study arts. I’m currently completing my DCS in plastic arts (1 semester left basically). Since I started last year, I received mentions for some artworks I made and won 1st place at an international film festival poster contest. Two of my paintings have been kept by my college as part of their art collection. I’ve learned many great things – and still learning every day – about art that really few people know about and I’d like to share all of this knowledge with the Insider eSports users.
In this accelerated art class, I will cover basic and advanced art theory such as 2D organization and visual language, color theory, artistic and technical drawing, graphic design and art history. I will also go over programs like, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, Corel Photopaint and Corel Draw.
I chose these particular topics not only because they are essential when you are creating art, but mainly because they are inescapable for digital graphic design, which I think a lot of people reading my classes will like to do (and are probably already doing it by doodling around in Photoshop).
However, I have no idea what to start with, so I’ll need your vote to start. So leave a comment below on what you want me to cover first, though, I do not want to get into web design just yet (Photopaint and Photoshop). I want to go over the 2D visual language and color class first, because they are essential for you to master.
Here’s an overview of each topic and the first couple things we would go over so it’s easier for you to decide:
Artistic drawing: We will go over graphite pencil drawing techniques (the pencils you use at school), drawing of real life objects, imagination drawing and anatomy drawing.
Technical drawing: In this class you will learn how to correctly draw perspective in your drawings. We will see the perspectives with 1, 2 and 3 vanishing points and all sorts of quick methods to easily give the illusion of the third dimension.
2D visual language: In this class, we will go over the visual composition principles to create images that are interesting to watch.
Color theory: This will probably be the most heavily loaded class. We will go through the 3 color synthesises, the 10 Johannes Itten’s color modulations and contrasts, how the eye perceives colors, color psychology and I’m forgetting a couple here, but that’s mainly it.
Art history: I don’t know if you guys will want this class but I offered it anyway because I personally like to enrich my general knowledge and this class is perfect for that. So if you guys really want it, then fine. We will go through general art history from the debuts of mankind to contemporary art.
Adobe Photoshop: Most common 2D graphic program, Photoshop is today’s industry standard. It’s always a plus to know how to use this tool.
Corel PhotoPaint: I’ll tell you now, for web designing, I use PhotoPaint, not Photoshop, because I feel like PhotoPaint is more appropriate for this kind of task. This class will come later when we talk about web design.
Corel Painter: Highly sophisticated digital painting program, it’s one of the most commonly used program in the industry alongside Photoshop. I use Painter because it gives a more traditional medium feel to my artworks and I like that a lot.
So those are the 8 classes we will (maybe) go through. I will be writing one article per week. Don’t forget to leave a comment below!
See you next week!
