Top 5 Teams to Watch in 2009

INSIDER ESPORTS - Jeremy "purge" Westerman takes a moment to discuss his thoughts for the top five North American teams to keep your eye on throughout this much anticipated 2009 season.

With the arrival of the 2009 season just around the corner and many rosters for the top North American teams set in stone filled with some new as well as old school talent -- only a few really hold a spark of interest so far.

Evil Geniuses.USA
Danny "fRoD" Montaner
Matt "Warden" Dickens
Tyler "Storm" Wood
Corey "hanes" Hanes
Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert

With the former compLexity all-stars and the addition of Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert, one can only ask -- Will this be the most dominating lineup throughout the 2009 season?

It seems as though this question could be answered with a simple "DUH" statement given the reputations, talents, and experiences that each individual withholds.  Although, it should be put into perspective that four of the five players have been contracted under the CGS for nearly two years, having put nearly 100% of their time into perfecting Counter-Strike: Source. This, of course, allowing time for the infamous "Source Bug" to kick in and leave those returning a little rusty.  Fortunately, it doesn't seem they will have much trouble returning to their old self as they have fared well in past 1.6 league events throughout 2008.  The only question that now remains is "How will they stack up internationally against the European powerhouses?"

Jax Money Crew
Erik "Da_Bears" Stromberg
Justin "Sunman" Summy
Mikey "Method" So
Sal "Volcano" Garozzo
David "Zid" Chin

The installment of the newly formed JMC lineup raises questions as to how they will compete with the new EG.usa.  To many, JMC is arguably the most talented team of the five listed above, but with hesitation, I would have to disagree. While they will provide a great challenge for former compLexity all-stars and the rest of the elite North American teams, I see them in a close second to EG.usa.  Though, we Americans shouldn't have any problem seeing these talented players fair well in up in coming international events, if they decide to participate, due to their experience over the years.

Gravitas Gaming
Ediz "goodfornothing" Basol
Derrick "impulsivE" Troung
Ben "benz0" Hui
Thomas "thoMz" Garcia
TBA

Former x3o, Gravitas Gaming as of October 2008, did surprisingly well representing North America over seas since the departure of compLexity, Team3D, JMC, Pandemic, etc. to the CGS up until it's demise in late November 2008.  Unfortunately, I do believe their time in the spotlight is up with the revival of EG.usa and JMC.  From the six years of spectating these players, I just haven't seen the over all raw talent than I have with fRoD, Sunman, Method, and so on.  I'm sure with their new addition, Thomas "thoMz" Garcia replacing Dan "mehLer" Mehler, they will do well within the international scene. Though, this all depends on who stands in the final spot since the announcement that Matt "PaTyoJoN" Iantosca has decided to retire from the Gravitas organization.

Frag Dominant
Nazar "steno" Vynnytsky
Michael "chE" Guevara
Richard "Levy" Levy
Scott "evolution" Cavallero
Matt "Lim" Beahan

Steno, chE, and their former EG.usa teammates, aside from n0thing, now reside playing under than Frag Dominant brand.  With their two new additions, Richard "Levy" Levy and Matt "Lim" Beahan, their should be no excuse as to not placing at least top five in every North American event in 2009.  The same goes for the newly formed x3o lineup, formally Paragon of Virtue.  While they have been nonexistent outside of the borders of the United States, they are probably the most underrated team of the five presented.  I wouldn't be surprised to see them explode with upsets over the next year.

x3o
Andrew "dRew" Timmerman
Ryan "NineSpot" Bell
David "savi0r" Park
Jeff "hero" Mettetal
Dan "mehLer" Mehler

Do not forget that this article was made, of course, without consideration of the possible new compLexity lineup currently in the works.  One can never predict what Jason Lake, Manager of compLexity, has up his sleeves.  Only time will tell as everyone can only assume something great is coming simply by visiting the compLexity webpage via complexitygaming.com.   Let us all also not forget that the Canadian EG lineup has yet to be released.  EG owner, Alex Garfield, made something good, nothing short of excellent with his newly founded USA roster.  So we, the community, can only wait in eager anticipation as to what Alex has in store for the fans of the EG brand.  Also, makeSHIFT's new roster seems to be promising as of late since the announcement of the long time veteran, Peter "supply" Lee, and former San Francisco Optix star, Mohammad "moE" Assad, were tagging up.

This up and coming season should be quite and interesting one with the showing of many new, as well as old faces, battling it out for the 2009 bragging rights.

Stay tuned to InsidereSports.com as we bring you the latest coverage from this fast approaching 2009 season!

I have a feeling that eg is really going to own this year. They got some new blood, and they might have fell asleep after so many years doing the same things. It's going to be great watching them.

jmc should be interesting.
if eg is anything like the old coL with the help of up and coming n0thing they could be an unstoppable force.
FD will be good but i don't see them breaking top3 in N.A. maybe a few upsets?
x3o looks yummy and GG will be good.

That will be one of my future write ups to come.
Expect it within the next day or two.

I would like to know what the future holds for Team 3D, they have always been my favorite franchise.

And does anyone else find the transfer from coL to EG odd? Jason Lake's former co-manager Alex Garfield has all of his all stars yet complexity isn't dead. Perhaps Lake wanted it this way, a new fresh lineup? Or maybe coL will be something other than a CS team?

Just thinking.

quote#15 US ryan 04/01/2009 - 08:38:11
I think JMC has the better players, but EG has 4 players that have been playing together for awhile, and know eachother.

Good thought about writing this article, however you need to work on your delivery. I saw someone comment that this was a good read. I believe you need to re-read your stuff before you send it out. Have another writer read it too so you can catch your mistakes. I won't name them, but I found myself fumbling over your words and having to re-read sentences to get the point. I'm not trying to be mean, I hope you take this constructively and work on your writing just a little.

quote#21 CA jFRo 04/01/2009 - 16:03:35
This could bring back the North American scene to a top level. As of now EG and JMC might develop a rivalry kinda like 3D and coL had before

quote#22 US Perez 04/01/2009 - 19:27:55
Isn't Patyojon on GG?

it's all good. i need a lot of work, i know... will get better over time, but until then...i don't think it's that bad for just starting out as a coverage / feature writer.

It's 5 days into 2009. Half of these 'Top 5 Teams to Watch' probably aren't even created yet.

Actually they are created. FD line up changed to the old EG team which makes them even better.

quote#29 US ImportedNoob 06/01/2009 - 08:41:39
Well, considering that MoB just picked picked up a brand new team that will probably be better than Gravitas (the worst roster on this top5, imo) I'd say there's a good chance that half of these Top 5 teams haven't been made.

quote#30 US tensionz 06/01/2009 - 13:20:48
And more to come. =)

Don't forget the new MoB!

Makeshift has some names but not a top team, even in the US.

Nvm about makeSHIFT. Moe left and the rest turned to iDemise and the only notable I see is supply who probably won't be there long (MoB!).

EG my #1 pick on this list.

Definetly JMC but will take a few weeks to get back in their old form..
